Are you planning to pursue a bachelor's degree at a top-tier university in China?
Every university sets its own admission standards, but many share similar application logic. This article uses Tsinghua University as a concrete example and offers general best-practice tips for international students applying to Chinese undergraduate programs. Always cross-check with the official admission page of your target institution.
Below we unpack the major admission dimensions:
program options, eligibility requirements, timelines, fees, and the application workflow.
Available undergraduate programs
Most Chinese comprehensive universities offer a wide range of undergraduate majors covering science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, arts, and medicine. Many also provide minor‑study options.
Tsinghua offers 93 undergraduate majors and 45 minors across 12 discipline categories, namely, science, engineering, literature, art, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, medicine, and cross-disciplinary fields. As a comprehensive university, Tsinghua’s structure and overall layout are characterized by engineering majors with collective advantages; literature, science, management, and law majors with distinctive features; cross-disciplinary majors in diverse forms; and responsiveness to the needs of China's development.
Eligibility requirements
General baseline criteria for international undergraduate applicants across Chinese universities include foreign nationality, a valid high school graduation qualification, good physical and mental health, satisfactory academic performance, and required language proficiency. Age rules vary by institution.
Applicants must be foreign nationals who do not hold Chinese nationality under the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China. At the time of application, applicants must hold a valid foreign passport or other valid proof of foreign nationality.
Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, demonstrate goodwill toward China, and hold a valid high school graduation certificate. The educational qualification must have been obtained through full-time, in-person education.
Candidates graduating by August 2027 shall submit a certificate of expected graduation issued by their high school, and must obtain the official graduation certificate before semester registration.
Academic performance
Applicants should demonstrate outstanding academic performance, supported by (but not limited to) the following documents:
High school/university (if applicable) transcripts (in Chinese or English).
Certificate of National/Regional Graduation Examination/Matriculation Examination (eg, ATAR/Abitur/BAC/CSAT/UEC/STPM/others).
Results of international standardized tests (eg, CSCA/SAT/ACT/A-Level/AP/IB/others).
Award Certificates from international or national level Olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, informatics, etc (if applicable).
Language proficiency
Two common study modes exist for international undergraduates in China: English-taught programs and Chinese-English bilingual-taught programs.
English-taught degrees: Mainly require proof of English proficiency; Chinese test scores are often not mandatory.
Bilingual-taught degrees: Usually require both Chinese proficiency (often HSK) and English competence. A waiver for Chinese-medium high school graduates may be available, subject to university approval.
Tsinghua University requirements for reference:
For its bilingual programs, applicants need HSK Level 5 or above, with a minimum of 60 points in Listening, Reading, and Writing, respectively. English proficiency documents are also required for non-native English speakers. No Chinese test score is needed for Tsinghua’s fully English-taught tracks.
Age requirement
Age thresholds differ among Chinese universities. Some require applicants to turn 18 before enrollment; underage candidates frequently need guardian documentation. Applicants must be at least 18 years old as of Sept 1, 2027. Applicants under 18 must present a Guarantee Statement of Guardian in China and relevant supporting documents at the time of registration.
Application deadlines
Many Chinese universities set multiple application rounds. Certain majors or dual-degree programs are only open in one specific round. Always mark official deadlines (Beijing Time for most Chinese institutions).
