Editor's Note: Spanning six decades, the bond between the People’s Republic of China and France has bridged the Eurasian continent. This year, we celebrate 60 years of Sino-French diplomatic relations. This deep-rooted friendship has brought two historically rich and culturally vibrant nations closer together. At the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) Paris Curie Engineering School, we aim to enhance Sino-French educational cooperation, introduce quality French engineering education resources and promote mutual educational development. In this issue, we explore the experiences of French teachers and students who embarked on the journey to China and the BUCT Paris Curie school.
Cross-Cultural Collaboration in Education
Ronan Feneux, who has been teaching chemistry theory and lab courses at the Paris Curie Engineering School for five years, is highly regarded for his profound knowledge and unique teaching philosophy. He believes that science involves explaining, predicting and transforming the world. His goal is not just to teach chemistry but to help students understand its essence.
Beyond his teaching duties, Feneux voluntarily manages the Microsoft Teams accounts for all French teachers, ensuring smooth access to resources. He meticulously coordinates chemistry teaching tasks and diligently records meeting discussions for reference and implementation. His integration into the Chinese educational environment and daily life has deepened his interest in Chinese culture.
Gauthier Roisine, an associate professor of chemistry who has also been at the school for five years, finds teaching in China both challenging and rewarding. Despite initial language barriers, he has adapted his teaching strategies with the support of his Chinese and French colleagues. Roisine is enthusiastic about Chinese cuisine and culture, enjoying the diverse culinary experiences that Beijing has to offer.
Louis Huguet, a mathematics teacher who has been at the school for five years as well, emphasizes practical learning and student engagement. He encourages students to learn through exploration and problem-solving. To better connect with his Chinese students, Huguet has been diligently learning Chinese, believing that mutual effort enhances communication and knowledge transfer. Though he will be returning to France to begin another job, he will cherish his time in China.
Pierre Bochard, another mathematics teacher, values logical thinking and the cross-disciplinary application of math. While working to overcome the language barrier, he appreciates the support he receives from his Chinese colleagues and enjoys participating in cultural activities like the French language corner and board games with students. His time teaching in China has enriched his career and inspired new educational approaches.
Personal Growth through Overseas Study
Arsène Losserand, a graduate student from the National School of Chemistry in Paris, is currently on a six-month exchange at BUCT. Initially unfamiliar with China, his stay has fostered a deep appreciation for Chinese culture and cuisine. The "Biorefinery" course by Professor Christophe Len particularly impressed him, highlighting the importance of green chemistry. Despite the challenges of learning Chinese, Losserand's dedication and the support he has received from his peers have helped him overcome the language barrier and integrate into Chinese life.
Lilibelle Gardet, also a graduate student from the same institution, faced initial difficulties adapting to the new environment and language. However, with the support of the school's faculty and students, she has embraced her life in China, making new friends and participating in various activities. Her experiences have broadened her perspective, and she looks forward to applying her knowledge in her future career, believing that her time in China will open up limitless opportunities.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The 60-year journey that is Sino-French cooperation has woven a tapestry of friendship transcending time and space. Through the stories of these French teachers and students, we gain insights into the richness and diversity of cultural exchange between the two nations. Their experiences not only signify personal growth and academic exploration but also exemplify the spirit of mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
Looking ahead, China aim to continue fostering international educational models with our French partners, contributing to the cultivation of outstanding engineering talents in the field of chemical technology.
