Nankai University launches 'Special Marathon' campus fitness drive

In response to the national fitness strategy and as a tribute to its strong sports tradition, Nankai University has introduced a unique campus branding initiative, the "Special Marathon." On Sept 17, over 1500 students, alumni, and faculty, gathered to kick off this exciting event.

The university aims to carry forward its sports legacy, promote the spirit of sportsmanship, and improve students' physical fitness.

Nankai University President Chen Yulu expressed the event's significance by saying, "As we approach our university's 104th anniversary, we are responding to the country's call for national fitness. This initiative aims to uphold our sports tradition, showcase our youthful energy, and inspire a sense of patriotism, aligning with our century-old Nankai spirit. Starting this academic year, Nankai will introduce "marathon" courses and activities tailored to different fitness levels, to promote our spirit and enhance students' physical and mental health."

As the starting whistle sounded, Nankai students took off with energy and enthusiasm, running together in high spirits. The atmosphere was joyous and orderly as participants encouraged each other along the way. Running in the fresh air, enjoying the sunlight, participants celebrated Nankai's sports heritage over a 1.2 kilometer route.

Liu Zhenhao, a 2023-class undergraduate student from Nankai's College of Artificial Intelligence, was the first to finish. Following his victory he said, "Participating in this campus event was a novel experience. Running alongside teachers and classmates who encouraged each other made it enjoyable. I've participated in running competitions on campus before and hope to continue running during my university life, encouraging more students to join."

Even students who aren't regular exercisers were motivated to complete the course. Wang Feiming, a 2023-calss undergraduate student majoring in mathematics and big data, said, "Running with my peers, I truly felt the joy of sports. I realized I wasn't as tired as I expected. I hope to use the 'Special Marathon' as motivation to maintain a regular exercise routine and improve my physical fitness."

Sports have always held a significant place in Nankai's educational philosophy. As the university's 104th anniversary celebration approaches, the "Special Marathon" initiative embodies Nankai's patriotic traditions and commitment to promoting physical fitness, inspiring students to contribute to China's great rejuvenation through robust health and unwavering spirit.
