The 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was released on Tuesday by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

Two Chinese universities, Central South University from Hunan province and Nanjing University from Jiangsu province, make their first appearance in the top 100, ranking 95th and 96th respectively. A total of 35 Chinese universities enter the top 1000 for the first time.

This year also marks the first time that universities from the Chinese mainland dominate the list, with 191 institutions entering the top 1,000, surpassing universities from the United States with 187 appearances.

The US maintains its advantage at the top 100, with 38 universities, followed by the Chinese mainland with 10 entries, the United Kingdom with eight and Australia with six.

Harvard University tops the ranking list for the 21st year, followed by Stanford University and MIT.

ARWU has been presenting the world's top universities annually since 2003. This year, more than 2,500 institutions were assessed, and the best 1000 universities in the world are published.
