This landmark is the famous Old Gate of the Tsinghua Garden, a three-arched white jade gate with a black brick base. First constructed in 1909, the Old Gate served as the main entrance to the then Tsinghua Xuetang (Tsing Hua Imperial College). The West Gate became the new front of Tsinghua. Thereafter, the earliest gate became known as “the Old Gate.” Over the course of time, the Old Gate has been a witness of Tsinghua University’s history and development full of ups and downs. Apart from being an iconic structure in the Tsinghua Garden, it symbolizes the diligence, realistic approach, calmness, and determination of all Tsinghua teachers and students.
