Chinese universities have started a "design competition" of college admission notices to woo freshmen by integrating technologies of laser engraving, 3D and chip in admission notices.
Tsinghua University
Tsinghua University updated its admission notice, with laser engraving and manual work applied in the three-dimensional school gate.
Shanghai University
Shanghai University sent a key-shaped "chip" to the freshmen. Students can activate the button on it and put it close to a mobile phone in which it can read a WeChat app then students will be able to watch a promotional video related to "red inheritance" and get their own digital admission notice. In addition, freshmen get a special version of the school logo, including nine colors.
Nankai University
An eye-catching design of two lotus seeds are wrapped in the admission notice for Nankai University. It also includes, a letter written by the 90-year-old Li Zhengming, who is an academician from Academy of Engineering and the first graduate student of NKU since the founding of the PRC. Li encourages young students to make further contributions to building a strong nation in his letter.
Harbin Institute of Technology
The admission notice of Harbin Institute of Technology is stunning, showcasing different colors from different angles when put under light — a metaphor symbolizing that each individual poses their own potential for greatness, if given a chance.
Xiamen University
The notice is not only designed with stars and cutouts, but also has a summary of Tan Kah Kee's speech, and handwritten notes by Lu Xun and Chen Jingrun.
One hundred years ago, Tan Kah Kee founded Xiamen University with the belief that, "education is the foundation of the nation", during a time of national crisis. Lu Xun, who taught at Xiamen University, wrote such classics asKuangren Riji (A Madman's Diary)and A Q Zhengzuan (The True Story of Ah Q).
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics
In the letter, there are three-dimensional laminated paper sculptures, including the Long March 5 rocket and a C919 passenger aircraft. Unfolding the sheet on which the notice is placed, one can view the blueprint of the aircraft.
In addition, a gift box has been added to the letter. Each new student will receive four badges containing the name of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the university logo, and two randomly placed customized aircraft.
Fudan University
In addition to the admission letter, each freshman at Shanghai Fudan University will receive a gift parcel containing a small paper lantern that features carving designs depicting the four seasons. The university said that it will be holding a lantern night for all freshmen when the new school year begins.
Also included in the package is a luggage tag, which symbolizes the university's hope that their students will "walk the world and into a better future".
Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai Jiao Tong University has designed a package that comprises a box which resembles its iconic, 125-year-old school gate. Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s admission package hearkened to a classic style, but it was still stunning.
Southeast University
Southeast University, in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, received a lot of attention online and from the media for its “singing box” acceptance letter. Accepted students received a magnetic box that shimmered under specific lighting. When they opened the box, an instrument played the school song. The box’s interior features a beautiful paper model of the school’s Great Hall and a timeline of significant events.
Tongji University
Tongji University, whose name references the Chinese idiom "crossing the river in the same boat", has created admission packages themed on winds and waves. The three paper boats included in the set express the university's hopes that their students will have a successful future.
East China Normal University
As East China Normal University is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the admission letters have been imprinted with images of the school's famous streams, greenery and main buildings.
Shanghai International Studies University
The admission package from Shanghai International Studies University takes the shape of an envelope, which signifies the opening up of a new chapter. The school's English motto, "Interpret the World, Translate the Future", has been printed on the cover to encourage students to help bridge China and the world.
Beihang University
Beihang's admission package contains various contents, carrying the university’s best wishes for the new students. On the covers of these customized EMS mailing packages, 7 planes are arranged into the shape of the Big Dipper, which stands for infinite hope and reverie. The Chinese word “Hui Da" is carved on the paper-cut, standing for the expectation of the new generation of Beihangers for their answers to the future.
Hainan University
The admission letter's cover is blue, symbolizing the vast ocean and blue sky in the island province of Hainan. HNU will also send gifts together with the admission letter, which are postcards themed around "Impressions of HNU". Each postcard is printed with a various HNU landmarks, such as the new south gate, Siyuan Auditorium, the library, Tian Jiabing Building, the concert hall, the research and development building, the exhibition hall, the bell tower and the cultural pillars.
